Passion for Painting School Competition

The Gate, Newcastle’s Premier Leisure Centre recently held a competition titled ‘Passion for Painting’ for all Newcastle school children aged 6-11.  As the name suggests, the competition required pupils to submit a picture/painting of how their family celebrates Christmas.  The competition was circulated throughout all of Newcastle City Council Schools with the help of Newcastle City Council Attendance Initiatives and Newcastle City Council Cultural Activities Program.

The competition winners would then be able to come to The Gate to paint their winning Christmas scene on a wall size canvas to be displayed for everyone to admire during the Christmas holidays.  The winner’s prizes also included The Gate goody bags filled with cinema tickets, restaurant vouchers, free parking tickets, personalised certificates and The Gate’s Passion for Painting Winner 2009 t shirts. Information and entries were forwarded to all first and primary schools within the Council to encourage children’s creativity and maximize participation.

This campaign was further assisted by the relevant head teachers and art coordinators to enhance pupils within their schools to place entries for the competition.   The Gate received over 200 entries from schools around the Newcastle area The Gate then had the hardest task of all which was selecting eight winners among the hundreds of creative entries received.  Luckily The Gate had some expert eyes on hand to assist with the judging.  The judges’ panel for the competition included Gillian Sanders, Attendance Initiatives Development Officer for Newcastle City Council, David Usher, City Centre Manager, Carol Metcalf, Artist and Enterprise Champion for Tedco Limited, and Sofin Asim Butt, Centre Administrator for The Gate.  Judging was held on October 6th and eight lucky winners were selected

The winners included a various range of ages and schools with varying creative capabilities.

These were Knoplaw Primary School’s Simon Morley(10), Tom White(8) and Jessica Taylor(9); West Walker Primary School’s Kaine Phillip(9) and Georgia Caines(9); Nandi Mabasco(7) from St. Johns Primary School; Sophie Jackman(6) from Walkergate Primary School and Moorside Primary School’s Shania Ghami(10).

The winners were then invited to The Gate on the 28th October for a day of painting fun and recreating their festive scene on a large canvas.  After their paintings were completed, they and their families enjoyed a freshly prepared lunch courtesy of Nino’s Old School Italian Restaurant at The Gate.

The Gate is proud to present the winning pupils’ hard work to the public and will be on display in the centre from December 1st through January 11th, 2010.  It will be located outside Pizza Hut for everyone’s viewing enjoyment.  The Gate is proud to be involved in supporting the abundance of young local talent.
