Dancing through the Generations
Wednesday, October 22, 2008
Revellers at The Gate were given a special treat in October as young and old came together to challenge stereotypes and strut their stuff in a special dance event in celebration of UK Older People’s Day.
‘Bringing Generations Together’ drew enthusiastic applause from the audience as sheltered housing tenants from across Newcastle performed Hip-Hop and Bollywood dances together with young dance students from the Newcastle Dance Centre.
The routines for these modern dances were full of energy and attitude, demonstrating that older people are full of life and interested in modern culture: “Our sheltered housing tenants are an important part of their local communities, and they showed that they want to get involved.” says Alyson Bell, Care Services Manager of Your Homes Newcastle’s Community Care Alarm Service.
She adds “The event was a big success, proving that young and old can work together to achieve something special - this is just the first of several events we’ll be hosting over the next few years, so look out for more opportunities to get involved and have fun.”
The modern day dances were followed by blasts from the past as the performers came together again for the Twist and some Rock ‘n’ Roll. Even the audience got involved, having fun trying all four dances in special “have-a-go” sessions. The event was rounded off with a spectacular Bollywood display by the Encore dance and entertainment group.
Hayley Conway from the Newcastle Dance Centre led the festivities on the night, and reported afterwards: “As a professional dance teacher myself, and for all the dance students that took part, working with the residents was a truly wonderful experience - each person worked really hard, became part of the team, and brought their own unique qualities to the event - and that’s what made it a roaring success! I can’t wait for the next event.”
The event was sponsored by The Gate, and shows how the Community Care Alarm Service is involving its customers in activities which promote greater understanding and respect between generations.
