THE GATE IS NEWCASTLE'S
PREMIER LEISURE AND
We’ve a wide range of restaurants and cafes, pubs, bars and clubs as well as the North East’s most exciting casino, Aspers, where entry is now membership free! You can also see all the latest blockbusters on 16 screens at our state of the art Empire Cinema. Our 24 hour secure car park gives direct access to all venues and Newcastle City Centre.
Opened in November 2002, The Gate replaced the 7 storey Newgate House, home to the famous Mayfair club, which played host to many well known bands during its 35 year life.
Comprising 19,330 sq m (208,000 sq ft) and located on a 2.5 acre site in the heart of Newcastle’s ancient Granger Town, behind the Eldon Square Shopping Centre, The Gate’s developers aimed to create a radically different entertainment offer with flagship bars and restaurants.
The Gate’s architect, Jeremy Ward of Geoffrey Reid Associates wanted to present the architecture of the contemporary street scene in a number of subtle and sophisticated ways, offering the opportunity for more dynamic effects through graphic and media projections and sound to bring the scheme to life.
BDP lighting choreographed an award winning day into evening lighting scheme incorporating robotic light fittings whilst the dramatic 24 metre high glass façade was the largest structural glass expanse in Europe at time of building.
The design and venue mix was chosen to appeal to families during the day into the evening and to sophisticated people wanting a lively mix of bars and restaurant offers through to 2am. The full weather protection and integral 24 hour basement car park was intended to allow all visitors to enjoy the drama of the undercover streetscape concept in a warm and secure environment.
The Gate was named Best Commercial UK Mixed-Use Leisure Scheme, by Property Week magazine and the British Toilet Association awarded The Gate a Loo of the Year Award and awarded it five stars.
Since opening, The Gate has expanded rapidly, now boasting 19 venues, many of which are new to the North East.
Customers can currently choose from a wide range of cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs through to the state of the art Empire Cinema and the North East’s most exciting casino venue Aspers, now accessible to everyone over 18 without membership. Opening at 10am for brunch the centre caters to a diverse customer base including families, business people, shoppers, workmates, students, couples and groups of friends. Many venues are open late into the night with club and party nights until 2 or 3am, whilst Aspers is open 24 hours.
During 2007 The Gate welcomed 5.8 million customers. Footfall is currently averaging between 112,000 and 130,000 visitors per week.
Secure and modern 24 hour parking is conveniently situated directly beneath the building, with entrance from Stowell Street, and the complex also provides a wide range of customer facilities such as cash machines, internet access and baby change.
The Gate’s multi-storey car park has a Secure By Design Award, approved by the Association of Chief Police Officers and the European Park Mark Award. In 2008 The Gate was awarded a Purple Apple Award by the British Association of Shopping Centres for their innovative marketing activities and The Gate’s Marketing Manager, Jude Leitch, was named UK Shopping Centre Marketing Manager of the Year at Shopping Centre Magazine’s Sceptre Awards 2008.
As the most futuristic leisure destination in Newcastle, we believe that The Gate has an important part to play in the future of the city.
We actively support the Newcastle-Gateshead Initiative's culture 10: a decade of world-class culture, along with the City Centre Management Group’s NE1 for Everyone campaign.
